Beschreibung

The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991 - Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Even if the latter did not necessarily follow on from the former, the two events are connected. While most countries in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe were able to undergo political and economic transformation after the Soviet system had come to an end, Russia still bears the heavy burden of the historical legacy of Soviet structures. With its striving for global power, a tendency towards military intervention, a president who rules as a monarchical dictator and the general population=s response to social and political challenges, the delayed effects of the Soviet era are still clearly evident today. Katrin Boeckh's history of the Soviet Union and its aftermath begins with the emergence of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics after the October Revolution of 1917 and traces its establishment as a state and its imperial expansion, through to its decline and the development of the successor state of Russia. Alongside the political history and its protagonists, Boeckh does not to lose sight of Soviet society; the majority, who for the most part endured the system, those who fought against it and those who were locked up in the Gulag or killed in their hundreds of thousands as "enemies of the people". To what extent did the ruling Communist Party's power and ideology-driven policies become reality in the everyday lives of the population? The long arm of the party, the economic effects of the planned economy, the cultural-political peculiarities under the dictates of Socialist Realism, the social formation of Homo Sovieticus, the "New Man", and finally - despite massive repression - the survival of religion are all brought into focus. Boeckh's narrative perspective is similar to that of a "wall view": the view of a "Westerner" looking, as it were, east over the wall of the Iron Curtain, in order to comment on the past from a contemporary perspective and from a distance.
