Even decades after the end of the GDR, little is known about the "Ingenieur-Technischer Außenhandel" (ITA). This state-run foreign trade company imported and exported weapons and military equipment within the Warsaw Pact. In contrast to the GDR's propagated self-image as a "peace state", dictators and so-called liberation movements in developing countries were also among its business partners. This contradiction was particularly evident during the First Gulf War during the 1980s, when the GDR supplied both belligerents, Iraq and Iran. In later years, the goal of generating Western foreign currency for the SED regime became increasingly important for the ITA. When the Wall came down, its files and documents were largely destroyed, so that the nature and work of the ITA has remained virtually unknown to this day. After years of research, Wolfgang Klietz presents the first comprehensive study of an organization, which has always worked in secret. Supplementary material to the book is available online."
